Significant 12 snipits from our Marmalady trailer that make it conform to a trailer

Firstly, the institution titles conform to that of a trailer, and up the professionalism of the production. The centre placed titles and consistency flow with the trailer and conform to our trailers genre. The use of a personally created green band conforms to a trailer, as this is commonly shown at the start of a trailer. We made our own on the software "Paint.Net" as we just wanted to replicate both the red and green band into one. Many indie coming of age movies show a scene in which two people are at the beach, this was progressed into our trailer to suggest time over a long period of time, as it is evident that the seasons change as it is contrasted between a shot of the protagonist and love interest kissing with winter coats on, as opposed to swimwear at the start of the trailer, and during the montage. The use of the sock scene was also a factor in recognising it as a trailer, as most trailers use close up shots of body parts for transitioning to the next shot.

The close up shot of Sam mocking Lola is an evident portrayal of a trailer as this is where the fast pace music is cut off for the characters dialogue with a record scratching sound and enables the audience to laugh. The fast pace of the shots by its use of jump cuts and transitions apply to a trailer as it doesn't drag out the story, and keeps the key aspects of it, while intriguing the audience. The contrasted portrayal of the relationship between Ricky and Lola in the party scene and the Montage is evident in suggesting a trailer like production as this is suggesting a progression over time which is most commonly shown in trailers.

The final scene of protagonist Lola lying on the grass is the most important scene of all in suggesting a trailer, as this is shown as a reflection over the past few minutes shown through trailer, however longer period of time for the protagonist. This is commonly used in movies or music videos where the one who has prevalence is shown beginning and ending the production, by seeing them begin in a different light to how they've ended out as. This is overlayed with narration of the protagonist saying "Growing up is finding out who you are and what you want" making that the most recognisable phrase throughout the film. Once she has finished with the narration, we are shown the movie title "Marmalady"suggesting its trailer-esque portrayal, followed by the institution logo and quick paced credits, finishing with a "Coming soon" there foreinferring that it will be out in cinemas shortly.

Post production editing for Marmalday

Here it shows how we put together our final trailer. We used a large amount of different audio media so we could fill in every aspect, from soundtrack, to dialogue, to background noises. in this screenshot, it is visible that we used keys to change levels of the sound that suit best the shot. For example where you can see the cursor point line of where its playing, there are small dot on the blue audio, this was where we changed the levels with the dialogue, we decreased the sound when no one was speaking as this was audio from our Camera and it picked up a lot of noise. This was a difficulty in our post production.

This is the texting scene, where you can see we have overlapped text and the green boxes symbolise t sound effects that we put to create the sounds of I messages being sent and received.

Since our AS production, our knowledge in editing has increased due to excessive amounts of research and tutorials, and subsequently learning as we go along. A lot of the editing proceeded was improvised whilst experimenting different techniques. A large factor to our editing was the split screen, in which we had to crop the image and then zoom in for the close up of the split screen scene. This was  difficulty as we had to estimate the rough sizing of the shot and make it fit with the other footage displayed on the screen at the same time. A basic use of cross dissolve and fade to white or black was progressed throughout. For the first shot and introduction to the institution logo, we used a dissolve transition for the title, and decreased and set the speed to fit the washing of the waves, so it looked as if we deliberately placed it that way, and looked more professional.

Another struggle in our post production was the use of narration, we had to watch the trailer several times in order to find where certain parts of the dialogue would be placed, because it has to flow well with the sound of the soundtrack, and the transitioning between shot to shot. We also dubbed over the party scene with a post recorded voice memo that was recorded on our phones. This was due to copyright as we had popular songs playing in the background so we had to completely mute off the scene and cover it with a non-copyright busy bar soundtrack, along with the carefully placed dialogue we recorded over with. This was hard in the sense of getting it to match perfectly with the movement of the characters mouths, but subsequently this turned out just fine, and wasn't too noticeable.

MARMALADY COMMENTARY

Evaluating Editing choices for titles in Marmalday trailer A2 production

Evidently the Marmalady title was the most important to the Trailer, as it brings the Trailer together. We needed to pick a font that would symbolize both the protagonist and film.We did research on google and searched "Indie font download" and came across several potential fonts before choosing the final one which was titled "Shady Lane". We wanted to create an innocent and lighthearted atmosphere through the use of colour, however we didn't want to be dull and go for the common use of white, so we went for a baby blue colour, which connotes youth, and connotes summer as the sky is a baby blue color in summer which links to naturalistic locations Marmaldy is filmed in. This was additionally successful as the use of baby blue suggesting youth fit well over the narration followed through in the end scene where Lola reflects on what she's learnt throughout the movie. Evidently, Coming of age movies tend to have titles in different colours to enhance their individuality and quirkiness, white/ black font is typically progressed in Thrillers or Action movies as they don't want to use vibrant colours, as this would subvert their genre.
For the credits, we took a simple text that we had pre-downloaded a while ago in graphic design. We wanted to replicate the most common typography for credits, however, slightly conforming to our genre. We stuck to the theme of Baby blue as this looked good over the grass. In our credits, we firstly displayed the Actors names, followed with Writers, Directors and Producers, and lastly involving the names of the People who helped us create Marmalady with their own Soundtracks.

The "Coming Soon" title was a downloaded brush stroke effect, this conformed to our genre as the handwritten effect is primarily progressed in these type productions, connoting school life and youth due to its adolescence nature.

Brand identity in Marmalday 2

another aspect of creating a brand identity was how we personally created our own Green Band for our trailer, instead of downloading a copyrighted picture of a green band, we created our own template on "Paint.net" and followed the concept of both a Red band and a Green band, to convey to our chosen genre, we changes the text on our green band to"Indie filmmaker association of Surrey" so that it would conform to our independent coming of age movie genre which is what we wanted to achieve. We mimicked that of both of these trailer bands to create our own. You can see below the aspects we took from both of the bands to create a final product that looks realistic.

Annotated Marmalady official trailer

We have annotated the scenes in our film trailer describing the effect they have and why we chose to film the shots that way.

Our use of equipment for Marmalady evaluation

Image result for tripod
Image result for samsung nx1100 camera
Image result for green screen blanketImage result for canon 700dImage result for Led light These were significant equipment we used to create our A2 production, since our AS production we have gained a greater knowledge of how to use equipment effectively. We invested money from our budget on buying a green screen sheet that was able to fit 3 people in front of it.We chose to buy a green screen specifically for the making of our film poster as a green screen enables us to edit the back ground easily. We wanted to achieve a conventional film poster look for our genre after doing a lot of research we found that the majority of film posters have their backgrounds edited with green screens so that they can place their main characters in front of what ever they want. We chose to have Lola the protagonist as the main image with a light yellow back ground the color yellow connoting happiness, comedy and summer.Because of our green screen we were enabled to edit our background to how we wanted it we added to the background picture of marmalade jars and a sketched sun picture, we played with the colors of orange and turquoise.
We also invested our money into buying a LED light that we could attach to our camera, this was very useful as it allowed us to control the lighting of the scenes as we could increase and decrease the levels of lighting on the LED light on the side of it.Therefore it allowed us to film our scenes even in when it was dark outside. Our A2 production definitely progressed from our AS production in the aspect of lighting as we did not have any equipment to help us control lighting in our AS production therefore we only presented our audience with dim bedroom lighting. Also the shots in the attic were sometimes unclear due to lack of lighting used. Another equipment that we used in our A2 production that we did not use in our AS production was an additional camera , me and Eleanor decided to use both mine and her camera as this would allow us to get various kinds of shots at the same time it was also very convenient with timing as we could both film scenes separately when we were not together. This was a weakness in our AS production as we could only film with one camera so that we both had to take turns using it and we couldn't do any filming separately.

Our Audience Feedback G324 - A2

We received some useful feedback from our target audience about our film trailer. We received positive feedback about our use of sound in dialogue and our unique soundtrack. Our narrative was also well received and conventional how ever some thought that our production could of been much better if we had developed other characters in the plot more instead of focusing on only Lola's perspective.

Presenting our Trailer G324 - A2

This is me and Eleanor presenting our film trailer to our audience we discussed our initial ideas how we have improved from our AS production and what we believe are our strengths in our A2 production.

Evaluating our shots for Marmalday A2 production

In our Marmalady  trailer we used various camera angles in order to connote a big production trailer. We chose to make use of both long and extreme close up shots in the opening our trailer. We filmed the sand on the beach in a close up while the institution titles appear on top of the sand we then cut to a long shot of the characters in the ocean. This choice of location "West wittering beach" also suggests our trailer is a professional big budget production. Many conventional film trailers have establishing long shots as well for example "kings of summer" a coming of age genre film included many establishing shots of the woods. This is a conventional shot in coming of age films we did tried to conform to these conventional shots by filming long shots in locations such as a beach and Ashtead common woods.

Evaluating shots in Marmalady

In our A2 production which is our Marmalady film trailer we wanted to achieve specific shots that would successfully show off our skills and improve the quality of our trailer we tried to achieve a Match action shot among the argument scene of Lola and Sam. To achieve this we took various shots of Eleanor playing as Sam following Lola and touching her shoulder to make her turn around to face her. We took both long shots, medium shots and close up shots. We combined the beginning of a long shot and the ending of a close up medium creating the illusion that it is all happening in one shot. We did this by cutting the first long shot when Eleanor reaches out just before she touches Lola's shoulder. Then the medium shot begins with Eleanor(Sam) touching Lola's shoulder and Lola turning around. This made the transition of both shots smoother and more professional. We were restricted in our AS production because of our choice to film the opening two minutes as if it were home made footage as this meant we had to film the majority of the production by hand and enabled us to include a variety of shots.

Our editing choices in our Marmalady trailer 1

One of our first scenes that successfully shows off our editing skills is the texting scene. We took a close up shot of Sam's phone where her chat with Riki is visibly open. We wanted to present clear omniscient narrative contrasting Lola's restricted narrative by making the suspicious messages stand out to the audience. We replicated the Messages which are blue by coping its format on Paint software and changing the text. We overlapped the images on top of the video and added in non copyright sound effects of keyboard tapping, sending and receiving. This aspect of editing  is similar to our AS production where we downloaded VCR font and placed it over the video at the bottom corner of the screen so that it suggests it is an old home made video which conforms to our plot.Nevertheless we further developed our editing skills with Premier pro by adding in sound effects at the exact time our text messages appear on screen making the scene more realistic. We had a few errors in our As production when editing our VCR font for example the time that the font shows changes from 7-8 very quickly making a short scene seem as it if its longer when it is not.

Brand Identity for Marmalady

In order to give individualism to our product we advertised it with a slogan we created that the audience would be able to remember for example a significant catch phrase. we chose a slogan that was short enough to be catchy and memorable while also relating to the plot of our movie and conforming to our coming of age genre. "Growing up is about finding out who you are and what you want" we incorporated this slogan in the ending of our trailer as the camera slowly pans right from a birds eye view shot of Lola lying down on the grass. We chose to add the slogan in at that moment as we wanted the audiences' last memory of the trailer to be this final scene with this significant catch phrase this way it is more likely that the audience will focus on the scene and remember the catch phrase as we purposely dragged on this scene making it slow paced in contrast to our former fast paced snippets of events. We also presented this slogan in our film magazine front cover in black font beside the image of me on the front cover to suggest that it is a catch phrase Lola personally says in the movie. We decided to include the slogan in both our trailer and magazine front cover so that they link with each other and further more create a bran identity for marketing purposes so that our film is easily recognisable because of our slogan. This marketing method has been used with several other Hollywood block buster films such as "Taken" famous quote "I will find you....and I will kill you".

How we established genre in our trailer

The opening scene of our trailer begins with a close up shot of the waves hitting the sand as our institution title appears in a white fancy font. We also included our own Marmalady soundtrack tune which is  a soft and jolly sounding guitar string tune. This plays in the opening of our trailer altogether this connotes our coming of age genre as the imagery of a sanding beach and the jolly guitar music suggests this film will have a light hearted feel and will entertain the audience instead of scaring them where as a horror genre movie would do. Our trailer also connotes the theme of romance which links in with our coming of age genre that included aspects of romance. We use a voice over narrative of Lola our protagonist talking about herself and how she feels towards Riki "Riki was everything" this is technique that has been used in many other romcom genre films as well for instance "Notting hill" and "Bridget Jones diary". Our use of montage clips of Lola and Riki is also really useful in connoting our genre as it suggests to the audience that the fil will focus on their relationship since they are both given prevalence.

Establishing genre of our trailer in the poster

In order to connote our "teen movie" genre through our productions we, firstly focused on the chosen fonts for the trailer and for the film poster and magazine covers. We chose to bold text so that it stands out to the audience, in our film poster we decided to have our movie title "MARMALDY" in capitals and it black and white this made it further stand out and also conforms to a conventional film poster titles of our chosen genre for example in the poster for "I love you Beth cooper" or "perks of being a wallflower". We also chose to use the "Shady lane" font from Microsoft paint for our movie title on our poster we liked this font as it creates the illusion that it has been drawn with a pencil due to the shading and rough look of it. We thought this would connote  youth as we usually associate doodling and sketching on paper with teenagers doodling in class. We found that this would successfully conform to our coming of age genre.

Representation part 2

Have we subverted or conformed to typical stereotypes of our "Teen coming of age" movie genre.

One of the "Teen coming of age" genre conventions we wanted to follow is a typical love interest for the protagonist, this is one of the conventions that effectively engages the audience as it proposes an enigma of whether the protagonist will win their love interest or not and how their relationship will go during the film.In a fairly recent film of our genre "secret life of dorks" the love interest of Patton is immediately introduced in various slow motion shots of her. The use of slow motion is used to make the audience focus on their appearance and see it through the protagonist eyes as Patton is watching her every move intently. This effectively also presents the love interest as attractive as the camera captures their best physical traits. We also decreased the speed of our medium shot of Rikki  Lola's love interest to  approximately 70% to create the slow motion effect to suggest to the audience that he is attractive and important in Lola's point of view conforming to the stereotypical "Baywatch" incorporated in many mainstream films of our genre.

Representation part 1

Have we subverted or conformed to typical stereotypes of our "Teen coming of age" movie genre.

We decided to create a protagonist "Lola" that conforms to the conventional protagonist in movie of our genre. We portrayed Lola as a victim hero in our trailer a character who is the target of a form of mistreatment and develops in the film in order to solve a problem and restore balance. One of the ways we presented Lola as a victim is by giving her prevalence in close up shots of her facial expressions this is effective in making the audience sympathize with her.We also narrated the trailer with a non diegetic voice over of Lola talking from her point of view, voice over narratives are very conventional for our genre and is used in many films like "edge of seventeen" or "Bridget Jones diary". This allows the audience to feel closer to the protagonist and see it through their point of view which influences the audience to root for our protagonist and sympathize with them.

Marmalady (Official Trailer)

This is our finished product for our coming of age genre movie trailer for "Marmalady".

Marmalady summary storyboard

LOL Official Trailer #1 (2012) use of texting and typing

After watching the trailer and film for this coming of age genre movie LOL we took inspiration from how effectively they used texting on social media to make their film feel more personal to the current target audience who are teenagers and are currently major consumers of  social media and smart devices. The diegetic sound effects used for the sound of typing are really evident and clear which is the same sort of thing that we are trying to achieve in our texting scene in Marmalady.

Marmalady editing part 2

So far we have muted the sound for our texting scene as the sound of typing is not very clear. We downloaded some none copy wright sound effects of texting on a I phone and we overlapped these sound effects where it fitted in time with the characters speed. and when she clicks send we added in the sending sound effect. This altogether creates a more clear and vivid scene making the audience focus on the phone. The next step we intend on taking is copying these texts on pain so that they look identical to the one on the phone and overlapping them as images that will pop up on screen beside the mobile phone as they are sent.

How we used Microsoft paint to create our magazine front cover

Image result for microsoft paint iconFirstly, we took a photograph off of Eleanor's Instagram that she had previously taken of the me (The protagonist), which we then formatted into a magazine cover size. Once applying the Title "Vivienne" over the top,we decided to apply a slogan/ subheading which added to the cover. "The very best in culture and the arts" suggests that this is of a magazine brand that specialises in all things art and media. Applying the small details such as "issue 27" and the date of "January 27" conformed to that of a magazine cover, additionally making it seem more professional.

The main priority of the cover was to get the message across of promotion, we intended to "promote" the new movie to an audience, by having "Luiza Paulielo IS Marmalady" is engaging and hits the audience, its short and snappy, yet says a lot. To add the style of an "arts" magazine and also the youth in the character,we applied layers of paint brush strokes beneath "Luiza Paulielo" also creating a cleaner look.

we decided to stick with a specific colour scheme in attempt to increase its professional appearance, and to suit the character herself, and the magazine layout. We went for a simple approach on magazine cover writing by just adding a brief look into whats to come inside the mag. By using different colours on both "Exclusive" and "Eleanor" it creates emphasis and also pin-points the importance of the writing.

To improve, we would add additional writing on the front of the cover, for example, we could add a promotion and add to another feature length film beneath the brief writing we already have. This would conform more to the magazine cover, as of now it is mainly focused on "Marmalady" itself.

Marmalady editing part 1

This is a behind the scenes of us editing and viewing our argument scene in our Marmalady trailer between our protagonist Lola and her best friend "Sam". When filming this scene we took various shots if the same scene we took long shots and then repeated the scene again and again however in medium and close up shots. In order for us to create a "Match action" shot.here is what we have accomplished by cutting our long shot when Sam reaches out for Lola we then trimmed the video just before she touched Lola. We then cut to a close medium shot and start it from as soon as Sam touches Lola's shoulder making it look like its actually all in one shot when actually we used two shots to create a smoother transition to the action. (Match action shot)

Our final product for our magazine front cover

This is our completed magazine front cover featuring our film "Marmaldy" after receiving useful feedback from our teacher we decided to add additional puffs and sub headings on the sides advertising other topics that will be covered in the magazines contents in order to address different readers preferences. We added the price £2.99 next to the bar code in white font so that it shows on the grass background however we also kept at a small font so that the price is not the advertised aspect of the magazine as it isn't very cheap we want our audience to immediately focus on what we are featuring. We also added a quote taken out from the movie trailer beside Lola's face. Ironically this quote "Growing up is just finding out who you are" is said by Lola herself in the movie. Therefore it suggests that this may be what our protagonist is thinking in this very image as she looks into the distance. The use of this quote is also effectively conventional to a coming of age genre. As it touches on the themes of growing up,Life and being in touch with your feelings which are prominent representations in coming of age movies. -

second draft for magazine front cover

this is our second draft for our magazine front cover. We have added some subheadings on the side of the image to further advertise the contents inside the magazine and conform to the magazine front cover conventions. We have also added additional details such as the date and a bar code. We added to our original title being"Luiza paulielo" which overlaps Lola suggesting that "Luiza Paulielo" stars as Lola in this movie. To make it clearer for the readers what film we are advertising we decided to change the title to "Luiza Paulielo is Marmalady" making a direct reference to the movie title "Marmalady"

first Draft for our magazine front cover

This is our very first draft for our film magazine front cover. We chose our magazine name to be "Vivienne" in bright orange bold text as we felt this color connotes happiness and amusement which are themes included in our movie genre conforming to our "Coming of age chick flick" genre. We also thought that having a female name as the magazine title suggests that the main target audience for this movie is a female audience as it is featured in "girly" magazine. our main image so far is our protagonist Lola who is laying on grass looking to the distance thoughtfully we decided that this image would be the best option as it stays true to how Lola is presented in the "Marmalady" film trailer. there are various out door scenes shown in the trailer where Lola is either lying on the grass playing in a sea or walking among the trees. Therefore having an image of Lola outdoors in touch with her surroundings conforms to her personality represented in the film.It also conforms to the coming of age genre conventions where the protagonist is the main concern of the film.
